Wilco Live in Wellington
There were a number of concerts on in Wellington over Easter, but if you could avoid the urge to head-bang to aging metallers then Wilco provided an oasis of musicality on Monday night. The Opera House in Wellington is a dreadful venue – and it is to Wilco’s credit that they managed to get the crowd worked up there. They played most of the crowd favourites, mostly from the last three studio album, for nearly two hours. The most notable aspect of the gig to my mind was the band members’ sheer musicality. In particular both the lead guitarist and drummer were stunning in their virtuosity. What’s more Wilco felt much more of a band than Jeff Tweedy with guests, and this made itself felt in the interplay, energy and fun that was apparent on and off stage. The crowd called them back for two encores, ending with a great rendition of “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” (one of my favourite tracks off A Ghost Is Born). The best gig this year so far – and it will take some beating!
