Zabriskie Point (1970)
Zabriskie Point is a movie that is very much of its time. Made by legendary director Michelangelo Antonioni by today’s standards it seems somewhat odd – disjointed, confused, even pointless. Coming after the turmoil of 1968 it seems to reflect an ambivalent attitude towards the times. The cops are brutish thugs, but their attitude seems less extreme than the empty violent rhetoric and actions of the “radical” students. The two main characters seem attracted to the attitude of the time, but unable to handle the reality they opt out of both peace and love and violent revolution but are unable to escape its clutches. An interesting document, but not, I feel, a great movie.
