Capote (2005)

The first impression on watching this film is that it is easy to see how Phillip Seymour Hoffman won the Oscar for Best Actor – his acting is sublime – the transformation into another person – the mannerisms, the voice – all adding together to give an impression of of the character Truman Capote (quite separate from the question of whether it was an accurate portrayal of Capote himself). Aside from the the acting, this is a good movie, directed in an interesting style, somewhat fragmented, but all the scenes giving you impressions and insights into Capote’s character and how that interacts with the events to give us the ground-breaking novel In Cold Blood. The script is very good – Phillip Seymour Hoffman has some very good material to work with – and we get a nuanced portayal of Capote through the words that the actors use.
