True Neil Gaiman territory – an adult’s fairytale – like a darker Princess Bride. A great supporting ensemble cast (if not always used to the best of their abilities) along with a script that walks on the right side of cliché make this a feel-good movie that doesn’t feel tired. Some interesting casting decisions: Michelle Pfeiffer is great as the wicked witch, Claire Danes is surprisingly good as the fallen star, but Robert DeNiro seems underused as the closeted pirate captain. This movie could have fallen down in so many ways, but didn’t. It is romantic without being saccharine sweet, a fairy-tale but not childish, and heart warming rather than nausea inducing. A movie for those of us who have matured but not left our sense of wonder behind.
