The Passenger (1975)

The second Antonioni film at the Film Society, this one has dated far better than Zabriskie Point. Another movie with an ambiguous title – is the passenger of the title the young girl that Nicholson picks up and who drives him to become the person whose identity he has stolen; or is it Nicholson himself, who has made a career of other peoples’ lives and is now a passenger in another man’s life going where a diary takes him, determining nothing and letting the inexorable facts of some one else’s destiny determine his fate?

A fantastic film, and one that shows why Antonioni was such a celebrated director.
