Citizen Vince by Jess Walter
Citizen Vince is an unusual book. In once sense it is standard crime fiction – dealing with a gangster, witness protection and mafia codes of “honour”. In another it is very much not typical of its genre: the main preoccupation of the protagonist is who he should vote for in the upcoming presidential election between Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. The philosophy toting cop adds an interesting counterpoint to the recently enfranchised mobster. Read this if you like your crime fiction a little more thoughtful than the usual run of the mill gangster novel.
