Art and the Human Condition

I am suspicious of claims that art can tell us something about the human condition. I’m suspicious because I’m not convinced that there is any such thing as the human condition. People are so different, and their conditions and lives are so different that I find it hard to believe that our lives are in any meaningful way the same. I’m also unconvinced that art can tell us anything. It can cause us to think about things, but can it tell us anything? I’m not sure (except for that most didactic and unsuccessful of art of course). It can cause us to think about our lives, and the lives of others – that’s a great enough claim.
